Climate change is one of UNEP's six thematic priorities, with an organizational objective of strengthening the ability of countries, in particular developing countries, to integrate climate change responses into their national development processes. Responsibility for the implementation of the overall sub-programme on climate change rests with the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics. The Energy Branch plays a particular role in leading climate change mitigation efforts in UNEP, supporting the transition towards cleaner and renewable sources of energy and energy efficiency. UNEP's work on climate change complements the activities of other institutions in the UN system.

More specifically, the Energy Branch:

• facilitates the transition to low carbon societies by building partnerships and engaging the private sector to improve energy efficiency; accelerating the development of markets for renewable energy technologies and promoting the financing of clean energy technologies, and
  
  
• helps countries make sound policy, technology, and investment choices that lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and potential co-benefits, with a focus on clean and renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and energy conservation.
