Assessment Components and Project Planning

The project has the following three assessment components:

Initial background study

Building on the scoping study and focusing more on eveloping countries, the initial background study examines risks associated with RE projects and identifies those which can be effectively managed by financial instruments / structures. Availability of such risk management instruments - both insurance and other financial approaches- has been surveyed in a global context. The study suggests some promising areas for development.

Working Group research

Reflecting the discussion at the first consultation meeting, 3 working groups were formed to assess risk management instruments/ structures in different focus areas. Under the direction of task leaders, consultants were mandated to conduct research with inputs from the working group members.

Feasibility Studies (F/S)

4 to 6 promising instruments/ structures that could be applied in GEF eligible countries will be selected and examined in more detail as F/S cases. In addition to those instruments considered under the working groups, other instruments proposed by the private sector may also be invited for selection. Each F/S will examine the market prospects in terms of regulatory environment, investment climate, availability of local financing and potential demand for the product.
