Tour Operators Initiative for Sustainable Development

This initiative has been developed by a group of tour operators together with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which currently hosts the TOI Secretariat. TOI was launched in March 2000 in Berlin, during ITB. The main aim has been to create an international platform of world-wide industry leaders to develop ideas and implement projects to address the environmental, social, economic and cultural aspects of sustainable development within the tourism sector.

Operators joining the Initiative are asked to sign a commitment to
(i) introduce environmental policy and management systems into their daily business operations, (ii) monitor and report progress implementing sustainable tourism practices, and (iii) promote sustainable tourism to suppliers, contractors and customers.

Developing, operating, and marketing tourism in a sustainable manner represent for TOI members the most effective way to (i) improve the quality of the tourism experience, (ii) guarantee the quality of the product they package for their clients, (iii) safeguard destinations in the medium-long term, (iv) safeguard the future of tourism business.
