Tourism-related and other UNEP-supported Initiatives

Numerous initiatives by the tourism industry target different tourism sectors and propose different types of partnerships to voluntarily improve sustainable performance.

The UN Global Compact: At the 1999 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, UN Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan challenged world business leaders to help build the social and environmental pillars required to sustain the new global economy and make globalization work for all the world's people. This challenge has grown into the Global Compact, which encourages businesses to uphold human rights, labour and environmental principles, both in their individual corporate practices and by supporting appropriate public policies.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
is an international, multi-stakeholder effort to create a common framework for voluntary reporting on economic, environmental and social impact of organization-level activity. It promotes international harmonization in the reporting of relevant and credible corporate environmental, social and economic performance information to enhance responsible decision-making. The GRI pursues this mission through an inclusive process of open dialogue and collaboration, involving all stakeholders in the design and implementation of widely applicable sustainability reporting guidelines.
